What does it mean for a book to be banned?

The term "banned book" refers to a book that is prohibited from use, performance, or distribution. According to the American Library Association, a book is considered banned when it is completely removed from a collection in response to a challenge, which is an attempt to restrict access based on objections from individuals or groups.

Did you know that most libraries have review processes for handling challenges, which can lead to books being removed or access being restricted? Many books banned at various times in U.S. history remain accessible to the public. You might have seen banned titles in bookstores or discovered that some childhood readings were once prohibited. It's even likely you’re currently reading a banned book from the library.

At Logan County Libraries, we like to offer a variety of materials and resources to our library patrons. Because of that, we encourage individuals and families to choose what best meets their needs.
